Do This To Keep Your NY Resolution
I often hear people say that they can’t ‘give up’ certain things when it comes to losing weight, or gaining muscle, or attaining a certain level of strength,
Here’s a fun fact of the day.
You aren’t ‘giving up’ anything when you decide to invest in a goal.
And yet I hear it all the time…
“I can’t lose weight because I can’t ‘give up’ drinking 100 beers each weekend.”
“I can’t get stronger because I can’t ‘give up’ watching youtube videos til 3AM every night.
“I can’t get lean because I can’t ‘give up’ icecream.”
You’re not giving up anything.
You are investing in something.
I am thankful for my friend Dwayne Ricketts who revealed this to me.
Dwayne would set a goal and stick to it better then anyone I have ever known.
One day I asked him about how he was able to sacrifice so much in order to stick to his goals he told me that he never thought of it as a sacrifice. It was instead an investment in himself.
That really struck a chord with me.
Not a sacrifice, but an investment…
When a savvy finance person puts money into real estate would you ever hear them say that they are ‘giving up or sacrificing’ money?
When a soldier proudly signs on to the armed forces would you ever hear her say that she is ‘giving up or sacrificing’ a better life?
When an athlete puts in hours training in the off-season would you ever hear him say that he is ‘giving up’ sitting on the couch?
All these people have goals and they are investing in them.
They are giving up nothing.
They are opening up their arms to accept everything.
When you ‘give something up’ you are investing in yourself.
So you can’t give up drinking or eating out or staying up late not because you can’t give it up but because you don’t care enough to invest in yourself.
You don’t believe that you can achieve your goal.
Why not?
If you 100% believed in your goal wouldn’t you invest all your energy into achieving it?
If you believed that you could get in shape and be healthy wouldn’t you start doing things that were in alignment with that goal?
Wouldn’t you invest in training properly and eating well and drinking some high quality H20?
Wouldn’t you stop telling people that you would be in shape but you just can’t ‘give up drinking’?
Wouldn’t you stop telling people that you would be stronger but you just can’t eat enough?
Wouldn’t you stop telling people that you would be more flexible but you just can’t find the time to stretch?
I know that it’s worth it.
I ‘gave up’ drinking a year ago and it has been the best thing that I have done in a long time.
At first I had the mentality that I was giving something up.
It was difficult.
It felt like a big sacrifice.
But the longer it went on the more I realized that I was investing in myself.
I was making room for bigger and better things to come into my life.
It was an investment in a loving relationship.
It was an investment in my training and chasing goals.
It was an investment in being a better leader and friend.
So what are you afraid of giving up?
What are you afraid of investing in?
I promise you that if you invest in yourself you will get more then you hoped for.
You may not get exactly what you hoped for; you will get more.
I did not expect to find my girlfriend/bestfriend/soulmate/bff/bffff when I ‘gave up drinking’ but I did.
I did not expect to become a better coach and leader when I ‘gave up drinking but I did.
What can you invest in today?
I would suggest going all in.
